It’s been about a year since I shared a drum chart, so here’s another one from Super Mario Odyssey; it might be my last Nintendo drum chart for a while, and I need to find more sources of big band music that don’t have published sheet music…
Anyway, today’s tune is “New Donk City” — this is the part of the game that has the really explosive big band tune that I shared last October. The song I’ve charted for today is part of the level’s background music that loops as you’re frolicking about.
As such, this is another one of those practice loop charts, and you can play along to the song’s main section repeating over and over for a bit of swinging stamina:
The second chunk of the tune is dominated by a lot of busy brass figures. The main drum set recording has the drummer playing brushes, but it sounds like there’s a drum set overdub playing some hits with sticks; the ensemble figure that kicks the chart off is definitely played with sticks. Feel free to use whatever you want.
For my last couple of charts, I complained about mentioned my difficulty in finding a good–looking handwritten typeface to provide that proper jazzy style. Well, it has recently come to my attention that the Finale typefaces are now part of the SIL Open Font License agreement, and you can download and install them even without owning Finale.
Finale Jazz Text is what gets used for a lot of professionally published jazz charts, often combined with some sort of retrofuturistic–looking typeface for titles (like Microgramma, or its later variant Eurostile). I don’t know who made it and exactly when, but I do think it dates back to the mid–90s at least. It’s still imperfect (no true italics and no bold font at all), but it’s the best option for me yet; as far as small caps fonts go, it looks very nice.
Unfortunately, some of the glyphs (like rehearsal marks) are kind of a pain to get into MuseScore — I ended up copying the ones I need from Font Book into a Pages document that I can copy into MuseScore.
I think I’ll stick with Finale Jazz. I guess that means I just have to redo the typesetting of all my other charts now…
