Well… that happened. Has it really only been ten days?
Uh… anyway, maybe we’ll talk about the election later. For now, I have some better news to discuss. Despite all the writing I do, I don’t talk about myself that often. So, for anyone who might be wondering, yes, I am in a band — we play shows and everything!
I’m talking about my group, River Mann, which more or less came together in July of 2022. It’s tough to describe exactly what our style is; at our core, we are essentially a rock band, adjacent to indie and folk sounds (although not necessarily an indie folk sound, if you follow). Perhaps I’d compare us to artists like Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, The National, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab, Of Monsters and Men, etc.
But I’m not here to prattle on with all of these superlatives — I have something more helpful. The reason for this post is that I can share my band’s debut single! It’s called “Beginning of Time” and you can listen to it here:
Unfortunately, this release is marred by a couple of things, mainly our completely rushing through the mixing process. The song sounds fine, but it didn’t live up to its potential. (Yes, “Beginning of Time” did not get enough time. Pain.)
We’ve actually had a live EP online for a while now,* but we haven’t been telling many people about it because it was a bit of a slapdash release — we put it out there to claim the River Mann name on the streaming sites more than anything else. I suspect we will take it down soon and tack the songs onto an album for whoever might miss them.
It’s very frustrating that I’m holding our debut studio release in the same regard, but you gotta start somewhere, I guess. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you what the debut single was for any of those bands I mentioned.
This song is going to be included on a six-track EP (hopefully) sometime in the next few months, so we’ll get a do-over, so to speak. But not every track will get a do-over, so we need to be better.
There’s not really an excuse for bungling this as we did, so maybe we’ll just call it growing pains. Anyway, if you wonder what kind of music I play, here you go. Hopefully, you can enjoy the recording more than I do!

We’re only playing in Colorado for the moment, but maybe someday I will announce that River Mann is coming soon to a venue near you…
